Photography Highlights
Orange County NY has been stuck in the grip of a harsh winter these last weeks. I’ve been trying to stay positive even though it seems to last forever. My goal has been to appreciate and document as many of the birds that overwinter in this area before they leave for the breeding season farther north. Below are a handful of photos taken over the last couple of weeks for you to enjoy.
I found this robin feeding on sumac and just had to take some shots. There has been a recent influx of robins to the area, with some relatively large flocks binging on crabapples and anything else they can find.
I've visited Liberty Marsh on the border of New York and New Jersey a couple of times in the last weeks. At this time of year my favorite birds to see are the wintering Short-eared Owls and Rough-legged Hawks. It’s always great to see Northern Harriers hunting the grasslands as well. I got a few shots that I like, even though the birds are often quite far away.
I always enjoy seeing the snow buntings that can be found in the farm fields. At this time of year, they are in their winter plumage. One day I hope to see them in their breeding plumage!
This Red-shouldered Hawk was catching some rays of sun on a recent cold morning.
I came across a small herd of deer at the edge of the woods. They look somewhat ragged, and I imagine that this cold stretch has not been to kind to them. Better days are certainly to come!

Can’t resist feeding shots! Great catch on that robin, I especially like how the red fruit catches the eye and draws it exactly to the action. The owl and harrier are also welcome guests every time, one of the birds we have in common and two of my favourite sightings!
Beautiful photos :-)
