Great photos from close up. Have you ever seen the big river version? Looked like a massive beaver but with a round curlicue tail. I saw one a few years ago in the Hudson River, with witnesses on either side of me. Pretty cool!
Since muskrats are primarily herbivores, they wouldn't be a threat to adult birds. But as opportunistic feeders, they are reported to have snagged the occasional duckling for dinner. From what I read, this is not a common occurrence, thankfully!
